Church History

“ We've Come This Far By Faith…”

The St. John Missionary Baptist Church had its beginning under the leadership of Reverend Wheeler and Reverend A.B. Demps. The Church edifice was constructed in 1949 under the direction and guidance of Reverend A B. Demps.

Reverend Jason Barr was appointed pastor in 1976. Under his leadership and guidance, the Church membership continued to grow. Rev. Barr led the way for the organization of the Junior Women Missionary Society, the Male Chorus, and the Youth Department. Also during Rev. Barr’s leadership a new organ was purchased, the Pastor’s study was refurbished, and a new P.A. system was installed.

Reverend Joe Calhoun was called in 1963. His leadership led to the development of the kitchen and dining hall the redesign of heating and air conditioning system reorganization of the Junior Choir, and the stucco renovation of Church’s exterior.

Reverend Johnnie Torrence became pastor in 1982 and provided leadership for three years. During his leadership, the Church continued with its exterior and interior improvements by replacing the roof updating the P.A. System and lighting system, and by carpeting and painting the annex.

Reverend Eddie Henry served as Interim Pastor during the Church’s search for its next Pastor. During Rev. Henry’s leadership the congregation continued the beautification and comfort of the Church with pew cushions stained glass windows and the extension of the choir stand.

Reverend Terry C Nimmons, Jr. was called in 1987 to lead the church. During his leadership the Church continued to grow and new auxiliaries were organized to meet the needs of the members. Usher Board #2 was established and the Youth Department reorganized.

Reverend C. Edward Preston, our current Pastor came into the lives of St John Missionary Baptist Church in February 1990.

Under his leadership the Church has continued to grow physically and spiritually. As a sign of growing Usher Board #3 was established.

In 1995 renovations were made to the Church and the annex, which included a new Pastor’s study choir room two laboratories two offices and a choir loft.

In order to keep up with the Church’s needs to reach out to the community, a church van was purchase in 1997.
In 1999 the Church’s mortgage was satisfied which led the way to the Church’s new vision of purchasing 8.42 acres on Brickyard Road. With the Church continuing to grow, in 2004 a combined usher board was established to meet the needs of the Church. In 2004 the Church set in motion the process of building a new sanctuary on Brickyard Road.
With the strong leadership and reverent guidance of Pastor Preston, the Church is now seeing the reality of the vision. In 2007, St John Missionary Baptist Church moved to their new location on Brickyard Road.
